On Sunday, June 7, 2009 we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday represents the birth of the church as we know it. Each year in late May or early June we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. Everyone was invited to wear red as a sign of unity and being on one accord when the Holy Spirit arrived. We held a small birthday party during the children's moment to explain how the arrival of the Holy Spirit to those gathered in the upper room was like a birthday party. The ballons were like the people gathered waiting to have new life breathe into them, as ballons need air to fulfill their role. The cupcakes and candles represented the tongues of fire that appeared and allowed each to hear and speak in everyone's language. Our lives need the Holy Spirit to light our fire to go out and profess the goodness of the Lord. And, finally the gift box represented the Holy Spirit bringing us the gift of truth, forgiveness and a better life. In celebration of the birthday of the church, after the service the congregation processed outside to launch red balloons to represent their joy in receiving the Holy Spirit and an outward sign that we too will spread the good news of Christ Jesus.
