Church History The following information has been derived from records in the Leonardtown, Maryland courthouse as it was recorded. There was a first recording of the church on March 1, 1880 under the name of Mt. Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church. By June 17, 1902, Mt. Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church was under the Washington Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Churches. The Extension Board of Pennsylvania granted $500 for land situated Southeast of and adjoining property of Charlotte Hall Military School on the public road from Charlotte Hall to Newport, Maryland (Route 6). Three quarters of an acre were granted by the father of Joseph A. Smoot. Mr. Smoot in 1903 granted a second deed to the church to ensure the church held clear title to the land. Mt. Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church became known today as Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in 1968 when the new United Methodist Church was formed in America, creating the second largest Protestant denomination.  Mt. Calvary UMC is a member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, Washington East District. The current church building has been renovated in small ways on three different occasions over the past 100 years. In 2003, a major renovation project was undertaken to expand the front of the church building, add additional seating capacity, update the bathroom facilities, as well as, bring the building up to code for handicap accessibility. The new addition and renovations were consecrated by Superintendent Mary Jane Coleman on October 26, 2003. Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church will celebrate 129 years in 2009.
